Utilizing both distinct and unifying traits, the concept for Coincide grew to include traditional notation, require active listening by the performer, offer visual and aural clarity for the audience, and draw from structural ideas used in electronic music. The result became a piece with a performer playing a melody utilizing a set timbre that would act as a goal or matching point for the rest of the ensemble. The other performers, with timbres different from the goal, would strive to match their personal sound to that of the goal person by actively listening to the person playing the melody. Once performers matched the goal timbre, they would join in reading the score. By the end of the piece, all performers would be reading from the score with matching timbres.
